Romantic Getaways In the South West: The Penventon Park Hotel

We were given a complementary stay for the review, but all opinions are honest and my own.

I was born in Devon and grew up here my whole life. I'm so grateful for all the wonderful things we have in the South West. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and filled with a wonderful selection of local producers of food and drink, with loads of incredible restaurants and eateries.

There are so many wonderful places to explore in the South West, but I really feel like I haven't explored far enough into Cornwall and Somerset, and all the amazing foodie things they have on offer.

I have been a judge in the Taste of the West awards twice, so like to think that I know great quality when I see it. The judges are usually assigned to visit places that are relatively local to them, and I have judged some great places in Exeter.

Last year I launched my own review series where I crowned Exeter's Best Breakfast, shortly followed by Devon's Best Roast Dinner. They were very successful and got hundreds of thousands of views on my website and for those featured. The success of these inspired me to launch a new series in 2019 that focuses a little further outside of Devon.

A couple of years ago we visited and reviewed The Bristol Hotel and had a great night away there. I realised how refreshing it is to spend the night away with a loved one, and make the most of all the hotel facilities and location. With Valentine's day fast approaching, I decided to try and find the best venue to enjoy a romantic night away in the South West.

The areas that I will be scoring will each venue will be the Hotel Facilities, The Room, The Food, The Service and the Overall Experience

The first place that we visited was the Penventon Park Hotel, a luxury 4 star hotel and Spa in Cornwall. Penventon Park is Independently owned and and said to be one of the finest destination hotels in Cornwall.

The hotel believes in great hospitality and delicious food, all provided in stunning surroundings. The relaxed restaurant recognises great food and it draws inspiration from around the globe whilst featuring Cornish ingredients.

Situated on the outskirts of Redruth, the Penventon Park is a luxurious Georgian mansion. It also boasts a spa with swimming pool, sauna and Jacuzzi, and is one of the only spas with poolside service in Cornwall. We stayed in one of their superior garden suits in January.

When we arrived we were shown around the room, and instantly fell in love with it. The room was really spacious with a separate sofa area with television, and even room for a coffee table.

The bathroom was also a great size with a large shower head.

There was a well stocked mini bar, and I loved the big case it was in. It gave the room real character.

This room even had it's own seating area outside of it, with the beautiful features of the gardens. This is an amazing feature to have with the room, and I wish it was a little warmer for us to be able to sit out there and enjoy it.

After we had settled into our room, we headed down to the pool area. We were greeted by friendly staff when we arrived, and sat beside the pool on a deck chair. Such a relaxed atmosphere with acoustic pop songs in the background. We had a little swim and were incredibly relaxed.

We even had a bottle of Prosecco to share, and my boyfriend had a steak sandwich. The food was delicious, we really felt like we were on holiday.

We headed back to the room, and got ready to have dinner. They have a Taste of the West award winning restaurant, so we were looking forward to trying it out. We tried their supper hour menu, which is 2 courses and a bottle of house wine for 2 people for £29 (usually £39).

There was a little confusion with my starter as I ordered a Duck Egg salad, but was given a Winter Salad, which was golden beetroot, parsnip, butternut squash, orange, red onion, lizard leaves,
sunflower seeds and a honey dressing.

My boyfriend went for the Ham Hock Terrine served with piccalilli and brioche toast.

For main I had Pan Fried Chicken Supreme with dauphinoise potatoes, garlic kale and a wild mushroom sauce. The mushroom sauce was delicious, and I wished there was more dauphinoise on the plate.

My boyfriend's main was pork sausages and mash with seasonal vegetables and an onion gravy. He said the mash was deliciously creamy and the gravy was rich in flavour.

We finished the meal off with a Gin tasting board! One of our favourite tipples, with 4 different varieties, fruit and a tonic. This was a wonderful end to our dinner and evening.

The whole trip away was really enjoyable, especially the amazing room and relaxing spa. I would recommend this as a great night away for couples, or even to come with a group of friends.
