Recipe: Smash-ing garlic bread!

Ok, so first of all I must say that this recipe can be quite controversial.  This smash garlic bread is classed by a lot of people as a great syn free alternative to garlic bread, however others class as a "tweak".

When foods like pasta, rice and grains are used in their original form they’re low in energy density (calories), bulky, appetite-satisfying foods. Pasta, couscous and rice are usually the main ingredient in a meal packed with other Free Foods – giving it sufficient bulk to be satisfying as a meal in itself. However, when ground down, used as flour (like in couscous cake), seasoned crisps (like Doritos) or puréed (like smoothies) they’re often used as additions to a main meal… and on top of your day’s Syns. It is a very effective way of adding a lot of extra calories in a non-bulky way, and as such would then be counted as Syns.

I do not class it as being syns and it is yet to affect my weight loss.  I purposely only have a few slices with my meal and make sure that I have lots of extra free and superfree foods with it.  So in short, decide whether you want to syn it or not! If you do it is 4 syns per slice without using butter, still better than the real deal!

If cooked right, I don't think anyone would be able to tell it isn't bread.

You will Need:-

1 pack of instant mashed potato
1 pizza dish/cake tin
teaspoon of basil, parsley and coriander
1 crushed garlic clove
42g low fat cheese (HEA) (optional)

Note:- You could also make a garlic butter with 1 tbsp of flora lighter than light, and 1 crushed garlic clove mixed together with the herbs instead of just sprinkling on the top and instead of cheese (1/2 a syn)

Method:-

Mix the mash following the instructions on the pack, but make with cold water. Add the water a little at a time as the mash needs to be made into a doughy consistency and you don't want to add too much

Using a rolling pin roll it into an approx 5mm thickness circle.  The key to this recipe is making it thin, otherwise you can tell it's smash!

Spray your tray/tin with fry light.

Put into the oven on the highest heat and cook until just starting to go golder, then turn over.

Once browned on both sides either spread with garlic butter or sprinkle with the garlic and herbs.

If using cheese, add it now cheese and bake for a further 10 mins, or until the cheese has melted. Cut into 8 slices to serve
