Review: Truffles Cafe Exeter

A little while ago an image popped up on my Facebook timeline.  A delicious looking pizza from a café that I have never heard of in my home town of Exeter, and I was instantly intrigued!  Pizza is one of my favourite things and I've eaten a LOT of it, and after some research I noticed this café is actually one of the highest rated places to eat in Exeter on TripAdvisor!  Of course, I just had to try it out for myself!

Situated on Magdalen Road, a road I rarely explore, it has to be one of Exeter's best kept secrets! During the day they have a delicious menu full of locally sourced ingredients. Although small inside, it has a really likeable quality and the plain white walls are spiced up with bright beautiful pieces of artwork that give a feast for your eyes to go with your meal. During the day they have a wide range of meals and snacks, here are some examples of meals taken from their Facebook Page to wet your appetite!

New season asparagus wrapped in prosciutto on sauté potatoes with poached egg and whole grain mustard dressing

Good game charcuterie board with home made chutney, home pickled onions and cheese of your choice

Our Table

To get our meal started we ordered some Good Game meats and some olives.  It is great to see food is sourced locally, especially from the Topsham based meat company.  Local sourcing, and the clear promotion of it, is part of the judging criteria that helped Truffels Café win a gold award in the Taste of The West awards (I know because I have done some secret judging!).

Everything on this plate was incredible, even down to the bread and butter! Even Nick, who claims to not be a lover of olives, was eating them like they were going out of fashion! The meat was full of rich gamey flavour and went well with the olives.

I went for "The Spanish" pizza, chicken chorizo and pepper. It was hands down the best pizza I have eaten (and as I mentioned, I have eaten a LOT!) The base was perfectly cooked and was actually pretty light on the stomach, unlike those nasty chain pizza places.  The meat was high quality with big chunks of chicken & chorizo, married perfectly with the tomato sauce.  There was just the right amount of toppings that the pizza wasn't sloppy, but there was still plenty of cheese!  A real thumbs up from me!

The Spanish Pizza

Nick went for "The Carnivore" Good Game charcuterie (venison salami, pancetta, prosciutto & chorizo), red onion, mozzarella and oregano.  The base was perfect, the toppings were delicious and the pizza was very much enjoyed!

The Carnivore

I cannot believe this café has been open for a year and I have only recently discovered it! I can't speak highly enough of the delicious food, as well a the friendly and very attentive staff. I will most definitely be going back for pizza, they have even teamed up with the food deliver service to bring the pizza to your door!

Pizzas are served Friday & Saturday evenings, follow them on Twitter or Facebook
