Review: Swans Nest

The Swans Nest is run by Carianne, Nick & Jolene who together have over 30 years professional service & training in local hospitality establishments in Devon. They aim to provide a family orientated pub restaurant, and they reopened The Swans Nest in March 2013.  It is situated on Station Road, just off the A379 Exeter to Dawlish road at Exminster, and has been an Inn since 1876.

I have been trying to find somewhere that offers a good carvery for a while, and although there are lots of places that offer a carvery, finding one that has been cooked well has proven difficult!  When we found out that this is one of The Swans Nest's specialities, we both knew that we had to try it.

We went on a Saturday lunch time and the place was packed! Full of families and people young and old; it is easy to see how they got their reputation as a family friendly place.  Even dogs are welcome in one part of the bar, and there is a little jar of dog treats available which I think this is a great touch, especially as a dog owner myself!

The smell of the roast was great, and it also looked delicious.  There was a choice of Turkey, Pork, Beef or Gammon and we could each choose 2 meats.  I went for pork and Turkey and Nick chose beef and pork. We stacked our plates up high with the vast amount of vegetables available, carrots, green beans, red onion, boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, parsnips and red cabbage.  There was every sauce available with traditional gravy as well as a gluten free and vegetarian alternative.

Something that is rare to find at a carvery is meat and potatoes that are cooked well.  My pork was cooked perfectly and was so tender that it just fell apart and the turkey was so well cooked, there wasn't a hint of dryness. Nick's beef was slightly dry, but it was the very last bit that was left on the carvery.  The roast potatoes were really good as well, crunchy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. The gravy was lovely, meaty and thick- just how we like it!  It is safe to say that this was definitely a very successfully cooked roast which we both really enjoyed!

When we went up to collect the carvery, the sweet section caught my eye.  Such a massive range and variety of different cakes and treats that I just couldn't resist!  After much deliberation I went for a chocolate brownie cheesecake, and it tasted as heavenly as it sounds!

Layers of cheesecake and chocolate on a buttery biscuit base- it tasted so good!  I was already really full from the roast and as always I have eyes bigger than my belly! I just couldn't stop eating though because it tasted so good!  Nick tried to share the cheesecake with me but unfortunately we had to leave some, which as I write this now I am regretting!

We were both really impressed with the friendly service and great food and will definitely be coming back again!
